Postgraduate Medical Courses

These are organised at 3 levels designed to meet the needs of doctors at different stages in their careers. The groups include participants from a wide range of hospital specialties who enjoy learning with and from each other.

GPs are welcome to attend our other senior doctors’ courses.

Level 1: FY 2 doctors’ annual workshop

This popular, one-day workshop runs annually in Edinburgh in partnership with NHS Education Scotland.

Level 2: Communication Challenges in Clinical Practice
2 day workshop for postgraduate doctors and senior nurses/ AHPs

This course is designed for specialty trainees (ST3 or above) and experienced specialty doctors. GP registrars are also welcome to attend. The course may also be suitable for senior nurses and AHPs (Band 6+).
One-day, multi-disciplinary clinical communication workshops are available for more junior medical staff, nurses and allied health professionals (see below)

Level 3: Communication Challenges in Hospital Practice, Teaching & Management
2 day workshop for consultants

A workshop designed specifically for consultants and associate specialists. Participants work with two senior clinical tutors and address complex scenarios brought from their own practice in a peer learning group of up to 8 colleagues from different specialties.

Level 3: Communication Challenges for Senior Medical Managers

This 2-day workshop offers medical directors, associate medical directors, clinical directors, and senior clinical nurse managers an opportunity to work on complex management situations brought from their own work roles in a small peer group of 8-9 participants with the EC4H lead tutors.

Level 3: Communication Challenges in Primary Care
Workshop for general practitioners

An interactive workshop tailored to the challenges of general practice in the era of QOF, DES and revalidation. GPs are also welcome to join the consultants’/ senior doctors workshop.

Multidisciplinary Courses

Communication Challenges in Clinical Practice
This successful, multi-disciplinary workshop is designed for post-registration nurses and allied health professionals and junior medical staff looks at clinical communication and teamworking challenges.

These workshops are being delivered/ accessed within NHS Lothian professional development programmes

Senior nurses and allied health professionals (KSF Band 6 and above) can also apply to join a Level 2, Communication Challenges in Clinical Practice workshop.

We run workshops on request for other NHS staff groups, multidisciplinary groups and single specialty groups.
